About Us

The nursery, which is idyllically situated 1/2 mile from the centre of Holywood, is set in the hills overlooking the town centre with panoramic views out over Belfast Lough to the lush green hillsides of County Antrim.

The nursery building is a large Victorian house dating back to 1867. In carrying out extensive renovations I have been sympathetic to the needs of children by ensuring that the warm, homely and welcoming atmosphere of the nursery has been retained.

I believe it is important that each child in our nursery is treated as an individual and our care reflects this. Staff members are encouraged through the key worker scheme to get to know the children in their care well, to ensure that all needs are met, whether they be emotional, physical, cultural, dietary or medical.

From their first day at Merdyn, we strive to make a child feel at home. To facilitate this a number of trial sessions are arranged for a child's settling in period, and parent/guardians and siblings are also welcome to ensure they feel confident in their new surroundings.

Children's progression through the nursery is by "ages and stages of development". Starting with our Babies and moving through to Tiny Tots, Toddlers, Preschool and finally Reception.

Activity programmes, which are predominately play based, are developed for each child, thereby encouraging them to develop at their own pace. Indoor and outdoor activities are used to stimulate and nurture a child's growing confidence and natural curiosity. Structured play, singing and story telling form part of everyday life at Merdyn.
